Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
