The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
